TFG incubator teaches young fashion designers the stitches for success

Young fashion talents from TFG’s Sustainable Design Incubator (SDI) are launching clothing ranges on South Africa’s largest fashion and lifestyle shopping app, Bash, and preparing to showcase their collections at SA Fashion Week in September. With support from TFG, they are renting premises, purchasing equipment, and hiring staff.

Masabata Sekonyela from Bloemfontein and Ju-Lauren Julius from Cape Town are two of the 14 designers who have received training, mentorship, materials and funding from the SDI since it was set up in 2022.

Training at the SDI prepares designers to work with large manufacturers and retailers such as TFG, and helps them to analyse their own style and translate it into an item a TFG customer will want to buy.

The incubator has established a key strategic role at TFG – starting with skills transfer, it also plays a role in youth development and enterprise development, and it is having an increasing impact on supplier development.
